I love good books.

"Medieval Swordsmanship Illustrated Methods and Techniques" is well over 10 years old, and while some of the information may still be valid, interpretations (even Clements' own interpretations) have changed drastically since it was published. It was a good book at the time, when hardly anyone else was publishing HEMA material, but there are better resources to be had nowadays.

Clements is also a rather... controversial... figure in the HEMA community.

Ahhhh, one thing that has really helped me as a police officer is not just the three awesome FTOs I had when I first came on the job, but the one piece of s**t one helped me even more seeing what I don't want to be like, extremely horrible tactical stances. I like to think there is something to learn from everyone and everything, the first eight chapters seem to be mostly historical in value, as far as the environment at the time and not as much actual fighting. Working with you guys and SDA, I don't only want to learn forms of fighting but also more of the rich history. If there are some more books that you can recommend I would really appreciate it.

i have that book. and if you cut out about half of it, the rest is a decent starting in footwork and sword technique, but there are better books, and i quote from eric him self in another post

Sir Eric wrote:
Hey Billy,

I own Tobler's book and found it very useful when I was starting out with the longsword. It has lots of good pictures and the accompanying text is usually pretty good. The flowcharts at the end of each chapter are AWESOME. The book is well worth the money, and I would recommend it to any beginner. We actually have a "house" copy somewhere at the Ordo site if you wanted to flip through it.

Another book I'd highly recommend for after you get through Tobler's is Jeffrey Forgeng's The Art of Combat: A German Martial Arts Treatise of 1570. This is an English translation of Joachim Meyer's German manual of fighting from 1570. It covers all kinds of weapons, including longsword, and really is a medieval "how-to" manual of fighting in the style of the time.

Tobler's book is a modern interpretation of various surviving books from the 14th-17th centuries. The vast majority of these books are available for free online, but are written in archaic forms of German and Italian and occasionally in Latin. The HEMA Alliance website is a great resource for studying Historical European Martial Arts. The site has a listing of online manuals and also has a forum full of people from around the world who are actively trying to recreate The Art.

I'm a hardcore sword nerd who is really into the historical side of what we do in the Ordo, whether it's weapons or armor. I've spent a lot of the last year studying modern and period books on fighting, particularly longsword. I also love to teach people who are willing to listen and put in some of their own personal time practicing. Feel free to PM me or email me or call me or whatever, and I'll be happy to give you some pointers and study guides and answer whatever questions you may have.

http://us.macmillan.com/theartofcombat $75 (says $80 on the page, but when you add to your cart says $75)

Can prolly find it for cheaper. This was one of the first 5 hits on a Google search. I want to say it originally listed for $75. I lucked out and got my copy for $45 plus shipping.

4000$ on amazon, i had to look, and damn that's outrageous. i was bored so i submitted feedback on amazon complaining about it. last time i had looked at it i saw it for 120 to 160 on amazon, this time around tho, that's insane.

but i think i'll end straight from the publisher for much less hehe.
