First I wrapped the rattan with a layer of 1/2" camping mat. Basically I just cut a piece of foam that made a tube that would very snugly fit over the rattan. I used a strip of duck tape to tape the tube together then slipped it over the rattan and taped it on the ends. For the "blades" of the spear I cut triangles out of a double layer of 1/2" foam (hot glued together) and then hot glued them to the sides of the foam tube. Then I ran strips of duct tape on both sides of each blade for extra strength. Then I used a pair of scissors to cut the bevel of the blade. I capped it off with 3 layers of 1/2" foam carved into a cone shape.
