What happened to all the pics? I am working on a one hander and two hander this week, and have a few questions. Do most people use a tennis ball for the pommel, if not what is being used now? The tennis ball seems a little large. Secondly, how is the automotive hose attached to the rattan for the crossguard?

Here is the method I used on my last long sword.

I get flat stock steel from the hardware store cut two pieces about 10 inches and bend them into "L" shapes, file the cut edges round, and tape them to the rattan. I like to tape them to the grip, as it make the grip more of an oval shape rather than round. This helps increase your edge control during cuts.

Also, the cross guard is used for a lot of defensive stuff in German long sword, so make sure your flat stock isn't to flimsy.

I then get some heater hose in whatever size will fit over the flat stock I happened to use. Cut a piece about a half inch longer than the side of the guard you are slipping it over so the edge will be safe. Tape it down.

I make my pommels out of blue foam.

For making non flimsy cross guards, I tape a couple of these onto my rattan where the cross guards would go. That's a 1/8 inch wide rod of steel I bought from Lowes and cut down to a good size for my sword. I then put it in a vice and beat it with a hammer a few times to get it to bend into that "T" shape.

I believe it is wider than 1/8". It is likely 1/2" wide, huh?
