It's not pretty, but it'll work.
You'll definitely have to do some trimming to the bottom edge to keep it from digging into you and getting in the way otherwise. At 14 ga, it'll be tough (not impossible, but damned tough) to trim unless you have access to a torch (which I have).
PS: There is absolutely nothing historically Celtic about this helm.

An angle grinder with a cutting wheel would do the job too.
